Coastal Climate Radio Series

The Coastal Climate Radio Series explores changes in the marine ecosystem, local observations, and pathways for adaptation through the perspective of fishermen, scientists, and managers on the ground in coastal Alaska. The series, organized by NOAA Fisheries and the Alaska Ocean Observing System, includes four conversations each in Kodiak and Sitka. The series is produced by KMXT’s Davis Hovey.

Kodiak Shows

Kodiak 1: Setting the stage for local climate conversations

This episode introduces the topics of climate change and ocean acidification, how we can contextualize what we’re seeing in the environment and the role of community conversation. Host: Terry Haines (KMXT). Guests: Mike Litzow (NOAA), Theresa Peterson (local fishermen and Alaska Marine Conservation Council), Marysia Szymkowiak (NOAA), Darcy Dugan (Alaska Ocean Observing System)

Kodiak 2: How do we interpret ocean changes in Kodiak and what can we expect?

This episode explores how Kodiak fishermen and researchers are thinking about climate change, what they’re observing in the ocean and in fisheries, and thoughts about the future. Host: Terry Haines (KMXT) Guests: Dave Kubiak (fisherman), Alexus Kwachka (fisherman), Darren Platt (fisherman), Mike Litzow (NOAA) Marysia Szymkowiak (NOAA).

Kodiak 3: Climate change and salmon

This episode explores the changing landscape of salmon fishing around Kodiak from the perspectives of fishermen, the hatchery, managers and scientists. Kodiak 4: Pathways forward - what does adaptation look like?

This episode looks at pathways forward for fishermen and fishing communities in the face of a changing climate. Guests discuss efforts Kodiak has made to adapt, current planning that is underway and what resilience could look like in Kodiak. Host: Terry Haines (KMXT) Guests: Theresa Peterson (fisherman), Darren Platt (fisherman), Nate Rose (fisherman), Andie Wall (Kodiak Area Native Association), Danielle Ringer (fisherman)
